This is a cost-effective solution that typically offers a lifespan of around 20 years.

Options include open-grade friction course mixes and stone-matrix asphalt. These surfaces reduce the noise on the highway, so nearby homes and businesses can enjoy quieter surroundings.
- Perpetual pavement: This is a great option if you need to minimize traffic disruptions and save time on your paving project. This pavement involves a combination of multi-layer paving and asphalt. It provides a durable finish that typically requires little maintenance and delivers a long lifespan. This makes perpetual pavement an economical solution for many projects.
- Hot-mix asphalt: As you drive along the highways and interstates, this is one of the types of asphalt in Washington that you’re most likely to encounter. It is the most commonly used type of asphalt on roads across the nation. It is used for paving both residential and commercial roads, resurfacing and patching. However, it can only be used when the weather is warm, because in cooler temperatures it cools quickly and becomes too rigid to properly cover the surface.
- Warm-mix asphalt: To create this asphalt, technicians use the same process as required for hot-mix asphalt, but they are able to drastically reduce the temperature. By creating the asphalt at a temperature of 50 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit lower, they can use less fuel and produce fewer greenhouse gases.
- Thin overlays: Creating a thin overlay involves the use of recycled materials and warm-mix asphalt. Adding this overlay reduces the amount of stress on the pavement. It also helps reduce noise levels on the road. Because it adds a layer of protection, it also reduces costs of repairs.
