All homeowners understand how important it is to take care of their property, including their driveway. Taking care of a driveway isn’t the most exciting chore, or even the easiest task, but it is important to engage in regular driveway maintenance. This means adding on new sealcoats when necessary, or completely repaving the asphalt.
With this in mind, here are a few of the most frequently asked questions we receive about driveway paving in Washington:
Q: Should I sealcoat my driveway, or should I put in a completely new asphalt driveway?
This really depends on the extent of the damage and wear your driveway has sustained. If you are only looking at small cracks and holes, sealcoating the driveway can resolve the issue just fine. But if there are areas where the movement is severely broken or rutted, then it’s time to start thinking about installing new asphalt. There comes a point where it doesn’t make sense to try to fill up cracks or holes any more, or when you simply cannot do it effectively. If you were to attempt to fill these larger cracks and holes, you’d have big areas of rubber filling cracks. During warmer weather, tires could stick to these larger areas and pull out the sealant. Over-sealing over the course of time can also cause cracks and holes to worsen.
Q: I attempted to put a sealcoat on my own driveway. Are you able to fix my mistake?
We can certainly restore your driveway, but whether it can be done with sealant or if we will need to repave it with new asphalt is another question. Many sealcoating products you can purchase in stores simply are not made to the same standards of quality of the products we use at Jimini Paving. We custom mix all of our sealers and ensure they are ready for long-lasting use whenever we take them out for a job. If there has been irreversible damage done to your driveway, we are more than capable of repaving to make it look better than ever.
Q: How long will it take before I’m able to drive on my driveway?
Asphalt surfaces tend to take about 30 days or more to fully cure. However, you are typically able to drive on the surface within a few days, so long as you are careful. Our team will provide you with more information.
Q: What causes asphalt to have different textures in some areas?
Asphalt is composed mostly of aggregates of multiple sizes, with five percent black asphalt cement. Therefore, no asphalt has a truly uniform appearance; there will always be slightly different shades of asphalt across a paved surface.
Q: Why should I use asphalt?
Asphalt is extremely flexible, as it can withstand slight movements of the base and will flex during use. It is also significantly less expensive than other driveway options.
